Another fantastic discovery on the island of Sri Lanka that all my jungle-loving friends need to visit is the uber chill surfie / yogi hangout, Ceylon Sliders. A small but stylish café space with a thoughtfully curated menu featuring seasonal local fruits and vegies.
The brainchild of Swedish couple and fellow travel bloggers, Linn & Petter, Ceylon Sliders exudes a sense of effortless chill in it's palm-fringed tropical courtyard that catches the sea breeze. Directly opposite one of Weligama's most popular beaches, and with rooftop yoga sessions, it really appealed to my Aussie/Swedish heritage and, like much of Sri Lanka, brought back fond memories of life in Queensland, wandering barefoot on the surf beaches of the Gold Coast or the squeaky white coral sands of the Whitsundays. Something about the sea breeze and the scent of pineapple and coconut coming from the kitchen, I guess!
Speaking of the kitchen, it was another special treat to sit down with Ceylon Sliders' chef-in-residence, Diana Basto Ferriera. Originally from Portugal, but trained in Paris, Diana's love of food that nourishes body, mind and soul has taken her on a culinary journey from classic French Pastry to Holistic Nutrition, Raw Cuisine and the art of Fermentation. We chatted about the advantages and challenges of working with fresh island ingredients, the almost magical properties Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plants and how her menu has evolved to work with what is in season. I really hope to try her Gotu Kola smoothie next time I visit!
So, you're dying to know what we ate, right? Aside from what my coffee-addicted partner-in-crime described as 'the best coffee in Sri Lanka' (it's all about the coffee machine by 'Rocket Espresso', I'm told!), we treated ourselves to a salty peanut butter and banana smoothie (with real treacle!), a tropical granola bowl and my favourite thing in the world – smashed avocado on fluffy house-made sourdough! The granola bowl deserves a special mention, however, with it's perfect blend of fresh baby bananas, sweet mango, juicy papaya and tangy pineapple. All topped off pomegranate seeds, chia and... a bit more cheeky treacle, just for fun!
Do be sure to check this place out, and oh, you can even stay the night! More on this later...
Take me there...
